April Adventures…

Below is just a few of our adventures from the month of April.

A Day in La Crosse…

Jacob had a mandatory one-day class in La Crosse, so we drove there for the day then headed on to Jacob’s family. While Jake was sitting in class all day I got to hang out with a few friends and their babies. It was a lot of fun so see the babies interact and their different personalities. It was also nice to catch up with Hannah and Heather and share new mom joys and struggles.

Minnesota Visit…

20140427-204720.jpgWe visited Jake’s Grandma at her assisted living apartment. She was humming to Graham which kept him from fussing and squirming. The lighting was bad…I wish I could have gotten better pictures.20140427-204657.jpgGraham with his great Grandpa Wacholz. I wasn’t able to get any pictures of Graham with his great Aase grandparents because for some reason he wasn’t too keen about being held by them. I felt bad that he was afraid but they understand that he’s just a baby. It’s so funny because some people he’s cool with and others not so much.20140427-204612.jpgWe drove to the Twin Cities for a day and went to the Mall of America then had dinner with Bekah and Ruthie at Pizza Luce.20140427-204550.jpgGraham enjoyed the sights and sounds at the mall. He’s at an easy age to take places plus he’s only one baby for two people.20140427-204401.jpgGraham playing with Selah and Uncle Joe.20140427-204347.jpgTaking a nap on his great aunt Kris.

20140426-211400.jpgGraham with his Grandma. Grandma gave him her study to sleep in while we were there so he had his own room for the first time. We get spoiled when we go home to Minnesota.

20140426-211616.jpgWe went out to Pizza Ranch with John.

Run For Home 5k…

Jacob, Graham, myself, my mom, and a few others from church ran/walked a local 5k to raise money and awareness for Exploit No More.

20140427-171815.jpg  I ran while pushing Graham. He slept the whole way…he’s our little trooper. My stroller works fine because the wheels lock, but I would love a real running stroller someday 🙂 20140427-171746.jpgJacob ran with me part of the way and then ran ahead the second half of the race.

March Madness Brunch…

Since high school every NCAA march madness tournament my family does a bracket challenge and the winner gets to decide where we go out to eat to celebrate. In the past, my dad has paid for the dinner so he loses no matter what. This year, we decided that the first and second place participants get their meal free (everyone else has to split their bill), the first place also gets to choose where we dine, and everyone else pays for their portion of the bill since we are all adults now. 🙂

20140427-171705.jpgBrandon is this year’s winner (I came in second), so he chose Thunder Bay Grille Sunday brunch. 20140427-171618.jpgGraham looks in the opposite direction we want him to.

We had a lot of fun in April.

Twins vs. White Sox

When the Minnesota Twins came to Chicago Jacob and I took a little day trip down (thanks to my mother for offering to babysit Graham) to watch them play. 20140407-203017.jpg Due to the chance of inclement weather Jacob scored close seats just behind the Twins dugout. 20140407-202852.jpgI thought I dressed warm enough (two layers of pants and three shirts) but we froze the whole time. By the end of the game there was hardly any fans present because it was so cold. Thankfully it didn’t rain. Also, since we had excellent seats it made the cold a bit more bearable.  20140407-202825.jpg 20140407-202805.jpg 20140407-202749.jpgJoe Mauer 20140407-202731.jpgThe highlight of the game was Jacob got a ball from Joe Mauer. We had 6-8 foul balls come our way during the game which was fun.

We enjoyed our day away together and stopped at Chick-fil-a in Racine (the only chick-fil-a in Wisconsin) on our way home for dinner. It was nice having the car ride there and back together to talk.

Michigan Visit…

This past weekend my mom, Graham, and I visited Michigan to visit relatives and celebrate my cousin Laura’s birthday.

We arrived at my Grammie and Gramp’s house Thursday night then Friday we drove to Battle Creek to visit my Grandma Iler at her assisted living home. We visited with her for a few hours then went out to eat at Applebee’s for Laura’s birthday. Saturday, since it was snowing a lot, we stayed in Coldwater. We celebrated Laura’s birthday with a homemade dinner (roast and potatoes) and cheesecake for dessert. Sunday we went to church then my mom, Graham, and I went back to Battle Creek to visit my grandma again. Aunt Kay, Brenda, Jeff, and Peggy stopped by to visit as well.

Sunday evening we visited Aunt Dorothy; my Grammie’s oldest sister who is 20 years older than her. We then went over to uncle Steve’s house to visit him who is my Grammie’s brother-in-law. It was the first time Graham got to meet either of them.

We left Monday morning and drove home.

He was a good trooper the entire weekend. We are now trying to get him back on his normal nap schedule. 🙂

Barbeque or Barbecue…

On our travels from Arizona to Minnesota we tried some Texas BBQ and Kansas City BBQ. This idea was inspired by a documentary we watched about how the 50 states got their shape and BBQ was features in one of the episodes, so we thought it would be a fun thing to do on our trip back. Plus, we’ve had southern BBQ before, so why not try the other varieties?

First stop Amarillo TX. Tyler’s BBQ is listed as one of the top places in Texas for BBQ. Amarillo itself is a strange town or as my husband calls it the arm pit of Texas.

CIMG1999We really liked the BBQ. Mine was chopped and Jacob had his sliced. The meat was very tender. Texas primarily only does beef bbq where as North Carolina is primarily pork, and Kansas is beef and pork. Plus both Texas and Kansas have a tomato based sauce.CIMG1997 CIMG1998We didn’t care for the sides very much, but the meat was excellent.

Our second stop was when we were in Kansas visiting Rachel, Kyle, and kids we went to Jack Stack Barbecue. It’s a chain in Kansas City.CIMG2032

CIMG2033 Jacob’s plate. He ordered a sampler plate of three meats. He loved the coleslaw. The meat was good, but we thought Texas meat was better.

We enjoyed the experience of trying the two different varieties.

Wisconsin to Arizona

2,050 Miles in three days….

This is going to be a picture heavy post and most are taken from my car window, so the quality isn’t awesome.

We left Milwaukee Wednesday afternoon and drove to Austin, MN then Thursday bright and early our adventure began…

South Dakota…

CIMG1683

CIMG1702We stopped at Mt. Rushmore because I had never seen it before. It was super windy there. Now I can say I’ve seen it.

  CIMG1703

CIMG1705Cheapest gas on our whole trip…Custer, SD.

CIMG1696Cool little tunnel

CIMG1691We stopped at Wall Drug. What a hick place…we weren’t there very long. I enjoyed the 500 billboards leading up to it though.

CIMG1692More Wall Drug

Wyoming…

CIMG1706Jacob took this picture (obviously), but Wyoming was boring, so boring that we drove on to Colorado to stay the night.

Colorado…

CIMG1719

Colorado was gorgeous driving through the mountains. We came across some snow.

Jacob enjoyed the scenery of Utah the best.

Arizona…

CIMG1758

We arrived in Arizona on Saturday afternoon to 104  degrees.

CIMG1762Some of our first Cactus sightings…

A few final Comments…

  • As far as scenery goes, Jacob’s favorite state was Utah and mine was Colorado.
  • We thought Wisconsin and Minnesota had a lot of land mass without civilization, but we were wrong. A large part of our country is a desolate barren wasteland. oh my goodness. Jacob says he understands now why they can do atomic weapon testing and no one can get hurt.
  • We saw a coyote.
  • Due to construction we got a chip in our windshield…how lovely. We’ll need to get that fixed soon.

I will update in the next few days with pictures of our apartment and Scottsdale comments.
